The Dangers of Social Media on Youth and How Art Can Help (2023)

Introduction:

If you live, work, or drive through the Salt Lake Valley you have probably seen the billboards posted along the I-15 freeway warning of the dangers social media can have on youth's mental health, according to the U.S. Surgeon General.  In today's digital age, social media has become an integral part of the lives of young people and society as a whole.  Social media is used to stay in touch with family, friends, or those who are not part of our daily lives. We use it as entertainment, for advertising, and as a revenue source for content creators. Social media platforms are here to stay and while social media sites offer numerous benefits, there are also negative effects associated with them.  Social media sites poses significant risks to children and young adults by having a negative impact on their well-being and mental health. Too much time on these sites can cause low self-esteem, poor sleep, depressive symptoms, mental health problems and social isolation. This blog explores the dangers of social media on youth and how the world of art can provide a powerful antidote to these challenges.


The Dark Side of Social Media:



1. **Social Comparison and Low Self-Esteem:**  Often what is shown on social media sites is not real life.  One of the most prevalent dangers of social media is the constant exposure to carefully curated, idealized versions of people's lives. This can lead to social comparison and a distorted sense of self-worth, as young individuals measure their lives against the seemingly perfect lives they see online. Teens, especially teen girls, are prone to develop negative body image beliefs which can lead to other disorders and have a profound risk of harm to their physical health. 

2. **Cyberbullying and Harassment:** The anonymity and detachment provided by social media platforms can embolden individuals to engage in cyberbullying and harassment, causing severe emotional distress for the victims. As with any digital technology privacy concerns are also a issue.  

3. **Addiction and Time Wasting:** Social media platforms are designed to be addictive, often leading young people to spend excessive amounts of time scrolling through their feeds, neglecting other crucial aspects of life such as academics, physical activity, and real-world relationships.  Too much screen time and excessive social media use deprive our youth from experiencing real world adventures.

4. **Mental Health Issues:** Extensive use of social media has been linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness among youth. The constant exposure to idealized images and lifestyles can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and isolation.  The detrimental effects of excessive social media use can  exponentially effect the mood and attitudes of our youth.


How Art Can Be the Solution:


1. **Self-Expression and Creativity:** Art provides a safe, healthy and important role  for self-expression and creativity. Through painting, drawing, writing, or any other form of artistic expression, young individuals can channel their emotions and thoughts in a constructive way. Less time on a social media platform and more time at the dinner table working on an art project has so many potential benefits. 

2. **Building Self-Esteem:** Creating art allows young people to build their self-esteem and self-identity. It encourages them to embrace their unique perspectives and talents, fostering a sense of accomplishment that is not dependent on external validation. The positive effects of art on young people's mental health has been shown time and time again. 

3. **Empathy and Connection:** Art can be a powerful tool for building empathy and connecting with others. Social connections are built in the real world through storytelling, visual art, or performance.  Young artists can convey their experiences and emotions, helping others understand and relate to their struggles, something that is harder to convey over social networking sites. 

4. **Digital Detox:** Engaging in art can serve as a healthy distraction from the constant pull of social media sites. It encourages young people to step away from screens and immerse themselves in the tactile world of creation.

5. **Mental Health Benefits:** Studies have shown that participating in art can reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. Art therapy is a recognized form of treatment that harnesses the therapeutic potential of creativity.
